We Now Know Why 'Doctor Strange 2' is in IMAX 3D (Hint: It Involves 'Avatar 2,' of course!)

Labels: , , ,

A few weeks ago, when I happily reported that "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" would be the first move in more than two years to get some IMAX 3D releases, I secretly wondered if the upcoming 'Avatar 2' had something to do with it.  I didn't publicly speculate, but now that my suspicions have been confirmed I wish I had.  Right now, we're in the middle of Cinema Con.  While I am not attending (and thus can only do secondhand reporting) James Cameron's world of 'Avatar' got a lot of attention.  First of all, the original "Avatar" (you know, the movie everyone hates that got nominated for Best Picture anyway) will be getting a remastered re-release this September.  The reason is because it has been more than a decade since the film was seen in theaters, and Disney (the studio who now owns 'Avatar') wants there to be a refresher before "Avatar: The Way of Water" is released on December 16th.

Yes, 'Avatar 2' has a title AND a release date!  Been a long time coming!  At Cinema Con a teaser trailer was shown to attendees.  3D glasses were handed out, as Cameron is going to be making it clear that 3D is THE way to see this!  According to Deadline:

Avatar 2 takes place in and around the ocean. Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Saldana) have children. “Wherever we go,” says Sully, “this family is our fortress.” The sequel looks even more jaw dropping in its deep-blue visuals than the 2009 film. All new creatures: We see the Na’vi on flying fish bird creatures, communing with a whale, and yet somehow divided despite their affinity with nature: The alien people are split, battling against each other in a guns vs. arrows fight. It’s truly a whole new world upping the stakes of the previous 3x Oscar winning film.

And yes, this teaser WILL premier before "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!"

This certainly makes sense why IMAX has dedicated several showtimes to 3D showings of the latest Marvel offering.  Not only does this movie seem like it is going to be a dream in 3D, but if 'Avatar' fans really want to see this teaser the way it is supposed to be seen, it's going to be in an IMAX 3D screen!  Of course, 3D has taken a big enough beating that most IMAX's will only have one 3D screening (two at most).  The good news is most screenings are at 4:30pm or some similar times (MUCH better than the 11:15am and 10:30pm showings I had to attend for "Avengers: Endgame" and "Spider-Man: No Way Home" if I wanted to experience those in the third dimension).

I also suspect that this is a test to see if there is an appetite for 3D movies again.  I have no doubt that "Avatar: The Way of Water" will only be seen in IMAX 3D when it is released.  Cameron is a powerful man and he will insist that 3D is the way to view this movie.  If the newest Doctor Strange overperforms, it may convince IMAX to dedicate more 3D showings to movies in-between.  Could the success of "Avatar: The Way of Water" inspire a resurgence in 3D?

Well...I have thoughts on that, and I have a LOT to say!  So, keep this blog bookmarked; there is suddenly a LOT we have to talk about!

There is NO 3D Release of "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore!"

Labels: , ,

Although I promised I wouldn't write too many blog posts like this anymore, I got enough e-mails from people yesterday asking what happened to the IMAX 3D version of "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore," and why I failed to mention that as the first IMAX 3D release in more than two years in my blog post yesterday (this morning...?).  Well, I didn't mention it because there is no IMAX 3D version...or any 3D version of this movie!  I can't even find evidence of a 3D release in China.  It seems that for whatever reason, "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" will be forgoing a 3D release altogether.  No, I don't know why this is the case, but then, Harry Potter movies have not been very consistent when it comes to being presented in 3D.  For the first four movies Harry Potter was a strictly 2D affair.  "Avatar" hadn't come out yet and 3D was largely limited to IMAX films.

With "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" the films dipped their toe into 3D effects by having the climax be presented in 3D exclusively at IMAX locations.  "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" continued that format by having the opening sequence in IMAX 3D (while normal theaters got the film fully in 2D).  These 3D sequences were praised by fans and critics alike, and once James Cameron made 3D cool again for theaters, Warner Bros. committed to ending the series in 3D.  That said, while "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" was advertised as being in 3D, the film makers decided that the 3D wasn't of the quality they wanted it to be.  Not wanting to be responsible for another "Clash of Titans," 'Deathly Hallows - Part 1' was released in 2D only (it would eventually get a BluRay 3D releases, where the results were praised as...fine).

Harry Potter finally made the leap to full 3D everywhere with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2," and the movies have been in 3D ever since.  It has become so expected for Harry Potter to be in 3D that a Chinese re-release...

...presented audiences with a brand-new IMAX 3D remaster.  Oh, and to get ahead so that I don't have to write another post on this: No, I am not aware of this version being available to purchase on BluRay 3D (but if I'm wrong please point me in the right direction).  Aside from this, the first two 'Fantastic Beasts' movies were also released in 3D (though they were released at a time when IMAX was starting to phase out 3D showings).

This means that Harry Potter movies have been released either partly or fully in 3D since 2007!

For reasons I am not clear on, a fifteen YEAR tradition has come to an end!  Why?  I have no idea.  I suppose Warner Bros. must have felt on some level a 3D conversion wasn't worth the money.  If there is a fourth 'Fantastic Beasts' movie it will likely also be 2D only.  I know this is going to be a bit of a disappointment, but what are you going to do at this point?  If you want to see it you'll just have to see it in the 2D format or not at all.  Course, this DOES mean you don't have to choose between IMAX/Dolby Cinema or a standard 3D screen, so that's kind of nice!  But, yeah, it appears there will be no more 3D Harry Potter projects in the near future.  It was fun while it lasted (even if it seems odd to end the tradition now).

'Doctor Strange 2' is First Movie to Get IMAX 3D Release in Over 2 YEARS!!!

Labels: , , ,

I'm obviously in a good mood today!

Even though I am getting a bit burnt out on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Netflix's "The Power of the Dog" made for a much more captivating cinema experience than "Black Widow" for my money), I have been very open that not only was "Doctor Strange" one of the more creative endeavors of the MCU, but it is also one of the shining examples of just how good 3D can be when used properly!  From my perspective if you haven't seen "Doctor Strange" in 3D...you technically haven't seen it.  While I can't say "Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness" is something I'm salivating at the mouth to see (I'm more excited about "The Bad Guys" if I'm being completely honest), there was a moment when I felt that an IMAX 3D experience would raise my excitement level considerably if it was half the experience that the last film was!  In that circumstance - having remembered how great the experience was the first time around - I might be able to muster up some excitement to see the sequel.

If only there was a possibility of that becoming a reality...but alas, we are living in a post-pandemic life, and movies themselves are on life support (never mind 3D movies).  Anyway, I forgot the tickets went on sale a few days ago, so I went to AMC to get my tickets and...

...well, the first thing that stood out was that there were two separate sections for IMAX.  Take a closer look at that sole showtime though and you can see "IMAX with Laser 3D" in small print!  Now, first of all, I do need to express SOME disappointment that AMC isn't making this clear that this is an IMAX 3D showing with a bold logo.  They USED to do this...but having not used the logo in a long time, maybe it got misplaced on their hard drive?!  I don't know, they had a pretty hectic two years in case you didn't know.  Ignoring that though, the key thing here is that IMAX is showing their first movie in 3D in over two years!!!  I mean, I can't even remember the last time I saw an IMAX 3D movie?!  It must have been...

...oh...yeah, THAT movie!  Didn't a John Campea episode inspire a blog post here...never mind, getting off track.  Anyway, the point is it's been a LOONNNGGG time since IMAX has given people the option to see an IMAX 3D film!  There are several reasons for this of course: A deadly pandemic that forced the world to shut down, lack of content, the fact that reusable glasses was likely going to change people's perceptions of 3D movies and thus putting the format in real long term jeopardy...you know, all that jazz!  The fact that "Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness" is getting some IMAX 3D screenings at most locations says a few things:

  1. The movie has 3D that is good enough that IMAX executives are convinced it's worth seeing.
  2. Marvel movies still have the power to charge a few dollars more for this format.
  3. IMAX feels that the world is in a good enough place that people will not fear putting on glasses that were previously worn by someone else.
However you want to look at it, this is very, very exciting news for 3D fans and now is your opportunity to buy tickets to see the movie in this format and send IMAX a message that projecting 3D movies is still a worthwhile endeavor!  What's even better is that (at least in my area) many of the showtimes are at reasonable times, so 3D fans mostly will not need to worry about taking time off work see an odd showing at 1:35pm.  If you're buying the tickets through AMC, just look a little closer to make sure you are getting the format you want.  Now if you're buying your tickets from Regal...

...thankfully, they're making the difference much more obvious.  Either way, thank you to the folks at IMAX for doing this and I hope I can write more articles like this in the near future!  Oh, and I am VERY excited to see "Doctor Strange In the Multiverse!"

Two 3D Films Win Big at the 94th Annual Academy Awards

Labels: , ,

Two 3D films won big at the 94th Annual Academy Awards that were held last Sunday.  I know, I'm a bit late writing about this but I was busy (like the rest of the world) obsessing about "The Slap" that occurred during the presentation.  This post is not about that incident though, as (like Daniel Radcliffe) I am starting to get bored of the conversation, and thus feel we should start talking about the movies again until the inevitable response from the Academy comes down in regard to said incident.

The first major win for 3D is that "Encanto" easily won Best Animated Feature.  While there was some hope "Flee" would sneak in and take the award, the blatant belittling of the award (which was basically used as an advertisement to promote Disney's terrible live action remakes [because, you know...why watch that old kids stuff when you can watch the "mature" live action remake]) was all the confirmation I needed to know that "Encanto" would be the winner before the envelope was opened.  Still, Best Animated Feature is technically a "major" award still, and a 3D film won it.  You can't watch it in 3D anymore, but it did win.

The big winner of the night in general was "Dune" though.  Not only was it the sole 3D nominee amongst the Best Picture lineup, it managed to win an impressive 6 Academy Awards (including Best Visual Effects).  Not only was that more Oscars than any other film that won that night, it was also a record breaker for a film that won the most Oscars without being nominated for Best Director.  Ironically, Jane Campion did win Best Director for "The Power of the Dog," but though she was the favorite to win that award her film won none of the other 11 Oscars it was nominated for.

To my recollection, no film has only won Best Director since Mike Nichols pulled off the feat with "The Graduate."  It not only highlights why Dennis Villanueva getting snubbed for Best Director was such a head scratcher, but it makes you wonder if the Academy really thought Jane Campion was the best director of the year, or if they just wanted to check off a diversity quota by being able to say that two women won Best Director two years in a row (which, sadly, is a new record even though there have been plenty of female directors who deserved nominations in the past).

Thankfully, you CAN buy "Dune" on BluRay 3D (and in America no less), so you can enjoy the Oscar-winning cinematography in three dimensions from the comfort of your own home!  And with that another Oscar year has come to an end.  I'll be back sooner or later with a blog post of some sort (maybe discussing if the 3D version of 'The Secrets of Dumbledore' is worth going out of your way to see?).

Oh, also, if you want to know who the winner for Best 3D was for our yearly hypothetical Oscars show...

Nine 3D Films Nominated at 94th Annual Academy Awards (Kind of...)

As the nominations for the 94th Annual Academy Awards were announced, nine 3D films scored nominations...with an asterisk.  Like the previous few years, they mostly involved visual effects heavy movies and with "Dune" being the sole Best Picture nominee.  A few were for Best Animated Feature though.  The nominated films include:
  • Dune
  • Encanto
  • Free Guy
  • Luca
  • The Mitchells vs. The Machines
  • No Time to Die
  • Raya and the Last Dragon
  • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home
As mentioned before though, these nominees all come with a huge asterisk in that several of these movies didn't receive theatrical releases this year, and thus their 3D versions were never seen.  If the 3D versions of "Luca" and "The Mitchells vs. The Machine" weren't released in theaters do they count for this post?  For arguments sake, I'm going to say yes.  It's nice to have a 3D film (one that you can actually buy in the states) be in the Best Picture race again (though it seems unlikely to win without a Best Director nomination).

3D Release of Pixar's "Turning Red" Cancelled (Along with Theatrical Release in General)

Labels: ,

Last week, Disney made the stunning announcement that Pixar's next film "Turning Red" would be skipping theaters for a Disney+ premier.  Pixar fans are not happy about this move.  As for me...

...well, I had some strong words regarding the choice.  This inevitably led some of viewers to ask what was to become of the 3D release?  After all, Pixar was so proud of the 3D conversion a 3D trailer (which is quite rare these days) was in front of almost every 3D movie for the past few months.  So what happens to it?  Does that one one:

A. Still get released in theaters?
B. Get a BluRay 3D release later?
C. Go to the Disney Vault?

The answer is - more likely than not - C!  I do not anticipate that we will see the 3D version of "Turning Red" anytime soon.  Pixar's previous films "Soul" and "Luca" did not receive BluRay 3D releases, and I don't anticipate this one will either.  Situations like this emphasize why it is important to bring awareness to the lack of 3D options on streaming and physical media, because when things like this happen 3D movies are in danger of being lost forever, and if you are a fan of film (or especially a Disney/Pixar fan) this is far from an ideal situation.

"Hotel Transylvania 3" Coming to BluRay 3D Four Years After Initial Release!

Labels:

Happy New Year everyone!

Have I got a SHOCKING news story for you!  I made it clear a couple posts ago that I would (more or less) stop reporting when movies were not coming to BluRay 3D.  It's not really news anymore, it results in redundant posts, and I decided it would just be better for everyone despite the fact that it meant this blog would potentially not be updated but a few times a year (BTW: Thank you to EVERYONE who continues to visit despite the sparse update schedule).  I did NOT expect to be writing this post today, but "Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" WILL be getting a BluRay 3D release in Australia and pre-orders are now open at Random Space Media:

The BluRay will include both 2D and 3D discs and will be REGION FREE!!!  Basically, that means anyone can import this thing and it is going to work on your player.  Now, just by the mere fact of this being released would be enough for me to report on its release.  What is truly strange is that this is a movie that came out almost FOUR YEARS AGO!!!  That's right, "Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" was release in the summer of 2018.  So, technically, this 3D release is coming out three and a half years after the film was released.  It's so strange to think of what inspired this third-party company to release a BluRay 3D of a movie that never got a home 3D release almost four years after the fact?!  Well...maybe the upcoming Amazon Prime release of "Hotel Transylvania: Transformania" in a couple weeks might have had something to do with it?!

Either way, this is more than welcome news!  Now, to be fair, I don't like "Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" very much as a movie (you can read my two-star review here).  Despite this fact, when I discovered this release I immediately pre-ordered a copy.  I did this for two reasons.  The first is that the 3D version was almost lost due to the lack of a previous proper release, so I want to make sure I have it just in case this is the only release we get.  I'm also pre-ordering it because I want to make it clear that just because a movie is old, I WILL purchase a 3D release of a movie years after the fact if a previous release was not made available!  I also sent the company an e-mail thanking them for releasing this (while arrogantly also listing off OTHER movies I would buy in the format if they wanted to make them available)!  If you're a fan of the movie and was disappointed that the 3D version wasn't released on physical media anywhere in the world, now's your chance to add it to your collect.

Pre-order here in case you missed it the first time.

'Spider-Man' & 'Sing' Are Must-See 3D Events!

Labels: , , ,

These days (as any fan of 3D film will tell you) we are lucky if we have one 3D movie to see in cinemas.  We're doubly lucky if that 3D film is worth paying the extra money for, as movies like "Black Widow" and "Dune" don't make for very good "immersive" experiences.  That's why it seemed worth getting off my butt and updating this blog to report that there is not one, but TWO 3D movies in theaters that not only deliver on the promise of how good 3D can enhance a movie but are equally worth paying extra money to see!  There would have been a third, but "Encanto" was prematurely dumped onto Disney+ so...streaming!  Anyway, the two movies I'm referring to are "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Sing 2."  We'll talk about "Sing 2" first since everyone has likely seen Spider-Man (and this is the one that is likely to lose its 3D screens sooner despite being the later release).

"Sing 2" is the sequel to "Sing," the animated film from Minions factory Illumination that has the dubious honor of being the highest grossing film to never have achieved the number one spot at the box office (in fact, history seems to be repeating itself as "Sing 2" is poised to be a surprise hit while ALSO likely never achieving the number one spot at the box office)!  The movie continues the story of a bunch of animated critters who have dreams of making it big on Broadway/the music industry (though Seth MacFarlane doesn't return, so no Frank Sinatra cover this time around).  This time around though they are trying to convince a reclusive rock star (played by Bono) to come out of retirement to help put on a massive show in Vegas.  Like the first film, the story and the characters aren't great.  They are fine for what they are, but they aren't especially memorable.  Where the movie shines are in the performances at the end of the film, as the tunes, animation, and (obviously) singing elevate the material into something that is special!

This was the effect in the first film and its more so here.  Now that the animals have a stage on Vegas to play with, the visuals and sets are bigger and grander!  The characters fly through the air on wires!  There are even hundreds of tapping...um, to be honest, I'm not sure I what they are, exactly, but they ARE pretty stinking cool to watch!  Illumination burst onto the 3D scene in a BIG way with "Despicable Me," a movie that needs no introduction but one where readers may need to be reminded was a movie that leaned HEAVILY into the 3D effects!  That movie basically threw everything and the kitchen sink at the audience who paid the extra $3, and it was the definition of a '3D gimmick movie.'  Since then, Illumination still makes their films in 3D but is more pragmatic on how they use the effects.  The visuals still pop but they no longer distract.  "Sing 2" may be their best balance yet, with a movie that brings subtle depth throughout the film until the big show numbers come into the picture, at which point the effects are used to immerse the audiences in the performs with lots of pops and long shots,

Obviously, kids love this stuff (which is why Illumination continues to make them).  Sadly, since it IS a kid's movie (and parents seem to be especially tight on the wallet when it comes to paying for kid's films), there aren't a lot of theaters showing "Sing 2" in 3D.  Those that are showing it have limited showings.  The closest theater to me had one showtime at 3:05pm.  That showing was almost sold out (thank goodness), but it speaks volumes to the theater's confidence in their ability to sell 3D tickets to family films.  Obviously if you want to send a message that this needn't be a concern you'll need to go to the theater and support it with a ticket purchase yourself (as well as write letters to management expressing your desire to see more 3D showings for new releases).  That brings us to..

...the big one.  The red one.  The money printer that is almost single-handedly saving the theater industry itself: "Spider-Man: No Way Home!"  Truthfully, it almost feels futile to be writing about this.  As one of the most successful films of all time (!!!), "Spider-Man: No Way Home" is a movie that is being watched by people and watched again, and again, and again...heck, my brother-in-law even saw the movie, and this is a guy who feels streaming is a superior viewing experience because he doesn't have to leave the house.  But leave he did for Spider-Man!  Anyway, it was a forgone conclusion that "Spider-Man: No Way Home" was obviously going to be a good 3D experience.  With the action sequences and swinging all over New York, there was good reason for Sony to advertise this as a '3D event' experience (something few movies have been noted as in the last five years).  The fact that we're into week three of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" being in theaters and there are STILL 3D showings speaks volumes to the fact that audiences must be embracing the 3D format for this one!

The first week I could understand going to a 3D showing because it's the only one available, but for tickets to still be selling at a rate that makes multiple 3D screenings a day necessary shows that people are enjoying their 3D experience with the web swinger.  It probably helps that Doctor Strange plays a role in this film and transports Spider-Man to the Mirror Dimension.  "Doctor Strange" is one of the best 3D movies to come out in the last ten years, using 3D to great effect with turning buildings, gravity defying stunts, and a hero who float in midair!  Even if only fifteen minutes of that were brought to this film, it alone makes the 3D screening worth the price of admission.  Chances are I don't need to tell anyone here to go see "Spider-Man: No Way Home," but if you want to see it again and haven't seen it in 3D...well, it may provide a unique visual experience that makes seeing it again worthwhile?!

Will either of these movies be released on BluRay 3D?  Maybe.  "Sing 2" is the bigger question as imports of Illumination films in 3D have dried up, so the theater may be your one and only shot to see the 3D version for the foreseeable future (a fitting fate, seeing that Bono's other 3D film he was in - "U2 3D" - really hasn't been seen much since its release in 2008).  Despite my previous article about "Black Widow" potentially being the last Marvel 3D release, "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Seven Rings" also got a 3D release in Japan while Sony is actually pretty good at release 4K/3D combo sets internationally for most of their movies.  Thus, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" will likely get a BluRay 3D release you will be able to import.  None of this is set in stone though and with the unpredictable nature of the BluRay 3D format, if you want to ensure you get the full 3D experience for either of these movies it's best to hunt them down in theaters and see them there.

"Revenge of the Shogun Women "Coming to BluRay 3D 12/14

Labels: ,

Cult action film "Revenge of the Shogun Women" is set to be released by Kino Lorber Studio Classics on 12/14/2021.  The film - directed by Mei-Chun Chang - was initially released in 1977 in theaters during a 3D craze revival where films like "Jaws 3D" and "Friday the 13th -Part 3 3D" were all the rage in theaters.  "Revenge of the Shogun Women" was not a huge hit upon its initial release, has never been released on DVD or BluRay formats, and was on the verge of being lost.  Thankfully the folks over at 3-D Film Archive launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to restore the film (under the capable hands of Bob Furmanek) and now that restoration work is complete.  The BluRay itself will contain both polarized and red/cyan 3D versions of the film.  For those who do not wish to view the film in 3D, there will also be a 2D version made available in the same set!

In a day and age where 3D TV's are a rare and dying breed, a release like "Revenge of the Shogun Women" is sure to please fans of the format.  It's also wonderful when an underground film is plucked from obscurity and saved through passionate film fans on sites like Kickstarter.  For fans of 3D  movies, "Revenge of the Shogun Women" is sure to be an interesting addition to their collection!

Marvel's "Black Widow" - In Potential Last Hurrah for Format - Confirmed for BluRay 3D!

Labels: ,

In what may be a sort of 'last hurrah' for the BluRay 3D format, Marvel's "Black Widow" WILL be getting a 3D release on September 15th, 2021!  This is especially good news for Marvel fans who were afraid the latest superhero movie would not be available in their favorite format, but in a way there's every reason to believe this will one of - if not the - final BluRay 3D release from Disney!  See, you can't buy this from Zavii in England.  You can't buy it in Canada.  You can't buy it in France or any of the other European countries.

No, the only place you can buy "Black Widow" with a 3D copy is in Japan!

More precisely, you will need to buy a combo pack that includes the film in UltraHD 4K and MovieNEX (which is basically Disney's version of Movies Anywhere in Japan)!  And yes: region locking will almost certainly be a thing, so hopefully you have a region free player.  Now, as I state over and over on this site (almost to the point where I could just copy and paste many of my previous posts, change a few names, and call it a day) I am always happy when a 3D movie comes to disc.  I feel even more happy in this case because Disney has been shunning the format in a way that I haven't seen them do since they first famously cancelled the US release of "Frozen" in BluRay 3D (thus setting off the domino effect of other studios ditching the format).  Despite continuing to make movies in 3D, Disney movies that did NOT see a BluRay 3D release recently include:

  • Luca
  • Soul
  • Raya and the Last Dragon
  • Us Again (Short)
  • Olaf's Frozen Adventure (Special)
  • Mulan
And this isn't even counting the fact that "Free Guy" was recently announced with no BluRay 3D release (and "Jungle Cruise" is almost certain to follow)!  It's not just Disney either: "The Boss Baby: Family Business" and "The Mitchell's vs. the Machines" either aren't getting a BluRay 3D release or will be getting NO physical release at all!  Honestly, it seems like Warner Bros. is the only studio really bothering anymore (which is saying something since their parent company - AT&T - cares so little about movies they dumped their entire 2021 slate on HBO Max for basically free), seeing that "Godzilla vs. Kong" actually got a BluRay 3D release in AMERICA of all places!  And now we have "Black Widow," coming out on BluRay 3D, yes, but in a combo pack that is highly expensive (Japan has some of the highest prices for movies in the world) and being packaged as basically a special feature.  I haven't had to buy such a release since (in a weird case of deja vu) "Ralph Breaks the Internet" was only available in 3D in a similar way.  And, yeah, I'm going to buy it.  Its going to run me north of $80 to do so because...well, what choice do I have?

Yeah, it's going to look weird on my shelf with the Japanese text.  Trust me, I know the feeling.  It's already weird enough to have discs in my collection that have an alternate rating on them other than the MPA's; having a foreign text cover the artwork makes it extra weird.  What choice do I have though?  Kind of like how I've had to make the decision recently to see movies in 4DX as opposed to IMAX to get the 3D effect, if I have to go to Japan to get "Black Widow" in 3D I guess I have to go to Japan to get "Black Widow" in 3D.  The fact that this is the only place to get it though, and that so many other movies in general have not gotten 3D releases, leads me to believe this very well may be one of the last BluRay 3D's we get in any form.  Maybe Warner Bros. keeps the format alive a little bit more, but the fact that even Zavii isn't getting 3D versions anymore means the writing is likely truly on the wall.

I know there is a lot of questions as to why, but it's really simple: the pandemic changed everything.  When the pandemic hit theaters closed.  Streaming got more popular.  More companies decided to put their eggs into their own streaming services.  Physical media became cumbersome to make when factories were shut down and production slowed to a halt.  It's much easier to stream things than to buy them on disc (in some ways its cheaper as well).  Theaters are open again but the theatrical window has shrunk again.  Disney has made it clear their future is in Disney+ and they've restructured their company in a way that makes this VERY clear!  Ironically, it actually costs LESS money to stream 3D movies than 4K or HDR, but with the 3D TV's still not being made why bother put them up that way?!  BluRay 3D has been a niche product for years selling around 20,000-60,000 discs a title.  Sure, part of the reason is that limited supplies of these titles are made in the first place, but these are not number huge corporations are interested in.

They aren't even interested in producing physical media anymore.  Streaming is cheaper for them and better for the planet.  It's a win-win as far as they are concerned.  Yes, there are problems with this thinking, but it doesn't matter; this is the direction Disney is going and every studio they own just has to live with it.  If you really love 3D, buy every disc you can, whether they come from Canada, Europe, or Asia.  If there's a movie you want to see in 3D, catch it while its in theaters or risk never experiencing it that way.  No, I'm not shutting down the blog, but there is less reason to update it.  Do you really want to read a bunch of new posts saying that a movie is NOT coming to BluRay 3D?!  Man, that's so common now its not even funny.  I'll talk about a 3D release that is coming and how to get it,  but saying a movie isn't getting a BluRay 3D release is like bringing up a politician and announcing they're corrupt: it isn't really news after awhile!  But hey, if you like "Black Widow," I'm happy you have this chance...even if you'll need to have katakana written all over the case.

Sony's "Venom: Let there be Carnage" Confirmed to be Released in 3D

Labels: , , ,

Although the future of 3D is still in question after Covid-19 almost destroyed the theater business (as well as proved to have an annoying fog problem for those wearing masks), it seems Sony intends to release "Venom: Let there be Carnage" in RealD 3D when the film is released in September (if the latest poster is to be believed).  No word yet on whether or not the IMAX release will also be in 3D (which the previous film was released in).  Although I'm still not sure how many theaters are going to be dedicating valuable screen time to 3D movies in the coming months, fans of the format can take some comfort knowing that "Godzilla vs. Kong" had 3D and 4DX screenings in America (and by all accounts did very well).

What will also be of comfort is the continued relaxing of mask regulations for those who have been vaccinated.  With (hopefully) the vast majority of people vaccinated by September, wearing masks should be less of an issue, and thus fogging of the glasses won't be a concern.  Although it's nice to see movies still coming out in 3D, I would be lying if I said I wanted to see this particular film in 3D.  The original "Venom" was a dark movie.  The 3D made things worse.  If the second film is shot brighter this won't be a concern, but it is worth noting none-the-less.  For fans of 3D, you have at least one more release to look forward to!
