As the nominations for the 94th Annual Academy Awards were announced, nine 3D films scored nominations...with an asterisk. Like the previous few years, they mostly involved visual effects heavy movies and with "Dune" being the sole Best Picture nominee. A few were for Best Animated Feature though. The nominated films include:
- Dune
- Encanto
- Free Guy
- Luca
- The Mitchells vs. The Machines
- No Time to Die
- Raya and the Last Dragon
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
- Spider-Man: No Way Home
As mentioned before though, these nominees all come with a huge asterisk in that several of these movies didn't receive theatrical releases this year, and thus their 3D versions were never seen. If the 3D versions of "Luca" and "The Mitchells vs. The Machine" weren't released in theaters do they count for this post? For arguments sake, I'm going to say yes. It's nice to have a 3D film (one that you can actually buy in the states) be in the Best Picture race again (though it seems unlikely to win without a Best Director nomination).
